How the Funding Rate Works
Funding is the mechanism that keeps a perpetual contract’s price near spot. It is exchanged between traders every 8 hours (the exchange does not take it). A positive rate: longs pay shorts. A negative rate: shorts pay longs. It is only charged if you hold the position at settlement. Read the full guide in the funding rate explainer.
Worked example: a $10,000 position
Positive rates are paid by longs, negative by shorts. At 0.1% per 8 hours, holding costs 2.1% of position size a week — more than many trades make.

Funding = notional size × funding rate × the number of 8-hour periods the position is open. It settles every 8 hours (00:00, 08:00, 16:00 UTC).
